GOOD BEER GUIDE Q & A

THE BELL INN
Bell Street

REAL ALES
Courage: Best
Fullers: Gales Seafarer's Ale
Fullers: London Pride

The half-timbered Bell is one of the town’s oldest and most ‘traditional’ pubs – exposed beams are a prominent feature. This friendly family-run pub has two bars and a separate higher area off the lounge where a quiet pint can be enjoyed. Pool table in the public bar. There is a pleasant small patio at the rear. Open all day. It is a rare outlet for Goddards beers, from the Isle of Wight.

THE OLD BREWERY
(the Blue Ginger)
Bell Street
Map Tel: 01256 895700

REAL ALES
None available

Why is this listed? Officially the Blue Ginger could revert back to being a pub. However, it is now a fine Indian and Bengali restaurant, where the food comes highly recommended, while real ale is available just over the road! Worth a visit.
It is included here as this pub has been lost to the vagaries of the Planning System that presently allows conversion into a restaurant without the need for planning permission.

Housing being built.
The Borough Council refused to allow public consultation.

This was an open-plan, warm and cosy pub on the site of an older pub of the same name. There is a small garden area to the side. The licensees had created a real community spirit with charity quizes and live music and use of the skittle alley, the only one in town. However Admiral Taverns decided to advertise the pub to others.
Cllr Golding and Basingstoke Council have a lot to answer for.
