GOOD BEER GUIDE Q & A

THE BELL INN
Bell Street
Map Tel: 01256 893120

REAL ALES
Goddards: Special
Courage: Best
Fullers: Gales HSB, London Pride

The half-timbered Bell is one of the town’s oldest and most ‘traditional’ pubs exposed beams are a prominent feature. This friendly family-run pub has two bars and a separate higher area off the lounge where a quiet pint can be enjoyed. Pool table in the public bar. There is a pleasant small patio at the rear. Open all day. It is a rare outlet for Goddards beers, from the Isle of Wight.

THE OLD BREWERY
(the Blue Ginger)
Bell Street
Map Tel: 01256 895700

REAL ALES
None available

Why is this listed? Officially the Blue Ginger could revert back to being a pub. However, it is now a fine Indian and Bengali restaurant, where the food comes highly recommended, while real ale is available just over the road! Worth a visit.
It is included here as this pub has been lost to the vagaries of the Planning System that allows conversion into a restaurant without the need for planning permission.

Hook Norton : Best

(on last visit)

An open-plan, warm and cosy pub on the site of an older pub of the same name. Pool is available in the large area off the main bar and there is a pleasant eating area to the left. There is a small garden area to the side. Handy for the historic Whitchurch Silk Mill, just up the road, which is well worth a visit.
The new publicans have just moved in and have many plans for continuing the fine community spirit this pub enjoys.

REAL ALES

Town-centre, locals’ local. Two distinctly different bars; public is lively with a pool table; lounge is comfortable, cosy and quieter. It has recently been redecorated and after several years absence real ale has made a welcome return. Now also offers Sunday lunches. The pub is opposite the Mail Sorting Office (Whitchurch has steadfastly kept its own).
Bus stops outside.

Affectionately known as ‘The Prince’, this unspoilt single-bar basic local free house has recently been taken over by new owners. There are few changes so far but the pub has been made much lighter with the opening up of the window behind the bar area and removal of some internal partitioning. Excellent juke box, Pool table and Sky TV. Good views over the Test Valley from the small patio.
Real ale prices are amongst the lowest in the area.
