The Gill Nethercott Centre is a new modern community centre opened on 28th April 2007 right in the heart of the small Hampshire Town of Whitchurch.

The Centre was the dream of the late local resident and councillor Gill Nethercott who saw the vision of providing a venue that could be used by all activities in the Town.

The architect has designed this 21st century building to sit in the natural landscape and to complement the shape of the nearby Whitchurch Silk Mill - built in the 19th century and still working, producing high quality silks.

Raised on modern-day staddle-stones that allow free movement of the wild-life attracted by the stream, the Gill Nethercott Centre consists of a large and a small pod linked by a section that spans the water.

It houses a large hall, a smaller side hall, a meeting room, a fully equipped kitchen, and an outside decking area. The modern Whitchurch Library is housed upstairs and is accessible by lift. Car parking is immediately adjacent.

The Centre is administered by the Whitchurch Association.

The Nethercott Centre has a part time manager, Sarah Castle, who can be contacted at the Centre on 01256 896270 or HERE

The Water Voles

vole1

The land and stream at the Centre is home to water voles and shrew which have been protected species since 1981. This is one reason why the Centre is built with a glass viewing panel in the floor over the stream which adds excitement to any visit.
A leaflet on the Water Vole is available.

The Time Capsule

A time capsule, which contains messages from the local community, the parish magazine for December 2006, the Christmas newsletter, a DVD of the development and a computer mouse, has been buried in one of the walls in the entrance lobby to the community centre.

A plaque is displayed on the wall above where the capsule is buried and states that it shouldn’t be opened until 2107.
